25 or 50 minutes? Choose your focus-session length

Compare suggested 10-, 25-, and 50-minute focus sessions and use a simple experiment to find a timer length that fits your task.

There is no single timer length that suits every task. A shorter session can make beginning easier; a longer one can leave room for a complex problem. Use these options as starting points and judge them by useful work completed.

Three rhythms to try

Focus / breakTry it forWatch for
10 / 3 minutesStarting a task you have put off or reviewing a short set of notes.Too many breaks once you have momentum.
25 / 5 minutesPractice questions, reading a section, or drafting a small piece of writing. The timer interrupting a useful train of thought.
50 / 10 minutesA longer assignment or a problem with several dependent steps.Losing attention long before the session ends.

Test a length over three sessions

  1. Choose one kind of work so the comparison is useful.
  2. Use the same focus length for three sessions, with breaks.
  3. After each session, note what you finished and whether the ending felt too early or too late.
  4. Shorten the next session if you repeatedly drift before the end. Lengthen it if you repeatedly reach the end with useful momentum.

A timer is a boundary, not an obligation to stay seated. If you need a break sooner, take one. If you are nearly done with a calculation, finish the step before stopping.

What counts as a good session?

Choose an observable result: solve two questions, outline a section, review ten cards, or identify the next obstacle. Time spent alone does not show whether a session helped. A short block that resolves one obstacle can be more useful than a long block with no clear task.

Use the duration picker in Focus Buddy

Focus Buddy lets you choose a session length and switch between focus, short-break, and long-break modes. Put the task beside the timer in your plan, start small, and change the duration as you learn what works for you.
